MTU Series 4000 Backup Generator Sets Deployed for Modernisation Project of Callao Port, Peru

Callao Port is Peru’s major trunk seaport, handling the vast majority of the country’s foreign trade container and bulk cargo throughput. It also serves as a vital logistics hub along the west coast of Latin America. In recent years, the local government has launched a large-scale port modernisation upgrade project, which includes container yard expansion, automated shore crane renovation, cold chain warehouse construction and the overall upgrade of the port’s energy security system. The project aims to boost cargo throughput, ensure round-the-clock continuous operation, and consolidate its position as a core regional shipping hub.

A key operational pain point for the port is mains power fluctuations and unexpected blackouts, which can directly cause shore cranes to stop working, cold chain goods to deteriorate, and container dispatching systems to collapse. These disruptions result in massive economic losses and shipping schedule delays. To resolve this issue, the general contractor JJC General Contractors South America collaborated with the local authorised service provider Detroit Diesel MTU Peru, and adopted multiple MTU Series 4000 12V4000G63 diesel backup generator sets as the core standby power supply for the port area. The main model is the 20-cylinder version, with a single-unit output power of up to 3250kWe. The whole system is equipped with automatic transfer switches (ATS), which can complete load switching within seconds after a mains power failure, ensuring stable power supply for critical facilities including shore crane equipment, refrigerated container power systems, port substations and central control rooms.

The MTU Series 4000 generator sets feature robust environmental adaptability, excellent fuel efficiency and an ultra-long maintenance cycle. They can withstand harsh coastal conditions with high salt spray, high temperature and high humidity, and remain on permanent hot standby to meet the stringent reliability requirements of 24/7 port operations. The local service team provides full installation guidance, system joint commissioning, routine maintenance and spare parts support, to ensure the units stay ready for immediate use at all times.

Julio Valeriano, the project manager, stated that Callao Port is transforming into a new trade and development centre for Peru and the broader Latin American region. Stable and reliable backup power is the foundation of modern port operations. After multiple rounds of technical comparisons and operational verifications, the MTU backup power solution was selected for its proven technical performance and localised service support, which can meet the port’s operational demands for many years to come.

As the full backup power generation system goes into service, the port’s power supply resilience has been greatly improved, significantly reducing operational risks caused by grid failures. It supports efficient operation of the automated terminal and ensures the safety of cold chain cargo storage and transportation, laying a solid power foundation for the stable development of Peru’s foreign trade economy. The project also demonstrates the adaptability and durability of high-power MTU generator sets in large-scale coastal infrastructure applications.
