A major aviation hub expansion project in the Middle East has secured a critical backup power solution: seven high-capacity mtu Series 4000 DS 3600 16V2000G25emergency diesel generators have been deployed for the expansion project of Terminal 2 at Kuwait International Airport, providing uninterrupted emergency backup power for the terminal’s catering buildings, central energy stations and core mechanical and electrical facilities.
The expansion project of Kuwait International Airport is a key infrastructure initiative under Kuwait’s long-term national development strategy, Kuwait Vision 2035. Upon full completion, it will have an annual passenger throughput capacity of 50 million, evolving into a major international aviation transit hub in the Gulf region. It handles massive passenger transfers, commercial operations and air traffic control functions, requiring an extremely high standard of power supply stability. Any mains power failure would directly endanger passenger safety, disrupt flight operations and affect the overall functioning of the airport.
The local climate is extremely hot for much of the year, imposing strict requirements on the generators regarding high-temperature resistance, start-up response speed and continuous load capacity. The 20-cylinder mtu Series 4000 emergency diesel generators have been specially optimized for the extreme heat of the Gulf region. They can operate reliably at ambient temperatures as high as 55°C, meeting the local demands for long-term standby operation and instant full-load start-up in case of power outages. They can be activated rapidly when the main grid fails, ensuring continuous basic power supply for critical facilities.
Local professional energy service providers will conduct the overall installation and commissioning of the generator systems. Delivery, acceptance and commissioning are scheduled for early 2026, with full testing carried out in compliance with international airport backup power standards.
