MTU Diesel Generator Sets Secure Emergency Power for Norfolk Offshore Wind Farm, UK

The large-scale Norfolk Offshore Wind Farm project in the United Kingdom has placed phased orders for high-power mtu diesel generator sets. These units will be installed on offshore converter platforms and onshore power transmission hubs, acting as core emergency power sources to guarantee safe operation of offshore wind infrastructure during grid outages and severe marine weather conditions.

The project will deploy four emergency diesel generator sets powered by mtu 20V4000 20V4000G24F engines across two development phases. Offshore converter platforms serve as the energy hub of the wind farm, transforming electricity generated by turbines for transmission to the onshore grid. In case of main power failure, platform control equipment, cooling systems, fire protection, navigation communication and safety evacuation systems require uninterrupted power to avoid equipment damage and marine safety incidents.

mtu Series 4000 generator sets feature special anti-corrosion protection designed for harsh offshore environments with heavy salt spray and wide temperature variations. The units deliver fast start-up and stable load capacity, capable of prolonged continuous operation and meeting strict safety standards for offshore installations. Compatible with HVO renewable diesel, they help cut carbon emissions during operation and align with low-carbon targets for offshore renewable projects. Equipped with integrated intelligent monitoring modules, the systems support remote status tracking, scheduled automatic self-testing and fault early warning, maintaining reliable standby performance even under unattended offshore conditions.

With a total installed capacity of 4.2 GW, Norfolk Offshore Wind Farm will supply electricity for more than four million households in the UK upon completion, marking a key project for national energy transition. Offshore wind facilities are far from the coastline, bringing difficulties for maintenance.
